No. 25 CS Parts Lists - Saw Profile Grinding Procedures
1. INSTALL CAMS TO MATCH TOOTH SHAPE TO BE GROUND:
A.  Cams should be bolted together with the yellow timing marks in line with the center hole of cam hub.
B.  The cone point screw in the cam hub should seat securely in the recess machined in the cam shaft.

2. INSTALL GRINDING WHEEL ON GRINDING WHEEL ARBOR:

A.  A grinding wheel thicker than the nominal size called for on the tooth shape print will create a shallower tooth with a fuller gullet.
B.  A balancing collar should always be used to balance and hold the grinding wheel.

3. SET SAW BAR FOR HOOK DESIRED:

A.  If the hook selected is less than the nominal hook designed for the cams, the gullet produced will be somewhat deeper.  More hook will give a slightly shallower gullet.

4. INSTALL SAW AND SAW CENTERING DEVICE ON SAW MANDREL:

A.  See saw holding devices for drawings of all available saw centering devices.

5. ADJUST SAW ABOUT 7-3/8" (18.5 cm) OUT FROM SHARPENER FRAME SO THAT THE SAW IS PERFECTLY CENTERED:

A.  Use the two cap screws in the saw carriage and the adjustable saw rest pad to align the saw to the grinding wheel.

6. ADJUST SAW HEIGHT SO THAT THE BOTTOM OF THE GULLET IS 1/8" TO 1/4" (3-6cm) ABOVE SAW REST PAD

7. RAISE HEAD BY TURNING LARGE HANDWHEEL (PT. 3668) ON TOP OF MACHINE UNTIL GRINDING WHEEL IS WELL ABOVE TOOTH POINT WHEN CAM FOLLOWER IS ON LOW POINT OF CAM

CAUTION:   Failure to make this adjustment properly could damage the grinding wheel and/or cause operator injury.

8. RAISE GRINDING WHEEL INTO UPPER LOCKED POSITION WITH HEAD LIFT CRANK (PT. 535)

9. MAKE SURE FEED FINGER ENGAGES SAW TOOTH AT DESIRED LEVEL

NOTE:  For best results, the feed finger will usually engage the tooth in the swaged tooth "pocket" or just below the Cobalt Chromium Alloy tip.
A.  Adjust feed finger track (Pt. 2985) until the curve of the track follows the saw line as closely as possible.   Install spacers under the feed finger shoe (Pt. 2885) to set the feed finger at the desired location on the saw tooth face.
B.  For tooth shapes with spacing 4" and longer, replace the standard feed finger shoe (Pt. 2885) with extra long shoe (Pt. 5077).

10. START FEED MECHANISM ONLY.  LEAVE GRINDING HEAD IN RAISED POSITION:

A.  Check the cam shaft for proper rotation.  Viewing from the front of the machine, the shaft should be turning counter-clockwise.

11. CHECK FEED FINGER TRAVEL:

NOTE:  The feed finger should travel 125% of the saw's tooth space.  For example, on a saw with a 2" tooth space, the feed finger should travel 2-1/2", clearing the next tooth by 1/2" before starting forward again.

If adjustments are required, check the following:

A.  Make sure the cam follower rides the cam for the entire revolution.  Add tension to the feed arm haul back spring as needed.
CAUTION:   Make no adjustments to the interior of the machine until the action motor has stopped.
B.  Adjust the feed finger arm for more or less stroke.  Raise the feed finger arm bracket (Pt. 5043) in the slotted feed arm (Pt. 5042) for more stroke, or lower this bracket for less stroke.

By lowering the bracket in the slotted feed arm, the adjustable feed arm feature allows the operator to compensate for reduced tooth spacing as saws are worn down.  This feature is standard on all current model No 25 sharpeners and can be ordered as a conversion unit for older models (Pt. 5041)

C.  Let the feed mechanism operate for one complete revolution of the saw to make certain the feed finger does not skip or fail to pick up a tooth.

12. TURN OFF FEED MECHANISM AND CHECK GRINDING WHEEL OPERATION

A.  Balancing collar should be snug on the wheel and arbor nut secure against the balancing collar.

CAUTION: Both the balancing collar and arbor shaft should have left hand threads.
B.  Inspect and replace worn arbor pulley, variable speed pulley on the motor, and arbor drive V-belt.

13. WITH SAFETY GUARDS IN PLACE, AND WEARING EYE PROTECTION, START GRINDING WHEEL ARBOR MOTOR:

A.  Check the wheel arbor for correct speed.  Most grinding wheels work best at approximately 5500 surface feet per minute (1677 surface meters per minute).

CAUTION: Never exceed the grinding wheel manufacturer's recommended speed.  Under NO circumstances should the No. 25 sharpener wheel arbor be operated in excess of 3000 RPM

14. WITH GRINDING WHEEL RUNNING AT CORRECT SPEED AS DETERMINED IN STEP 13, SMOOTHLY DRESS WHEEL AS FOLLOWS:

A.  Shape the wheel using a diamond dresser or rotating abrasive wheel designed for this purpose.  The shape of the wheel will determine the shape of the gullet.
B.  "Open" the wheel (expose sharp cutting points) by dressing the wheel with a star-type grinding wheel dresser designed for this purpose.

15. STOP GRINDING WHEEL MOTOR AND START CAM ACTION MOTOR.  WITH BOTH FEED AND TREADLE CAM FOLLOWERS RIDING CAMS FOR A COMPLETE REVOLUTION, LOWER GRINDING WHEEL SLOWLY INTO GULLET

NOTE: Do not allow the grinding wheel to touch the saw when making this adjustment.  If the wheel hits the say, it could crack and cause injury to the operator when later brought up to speed.

16. WHEN GRINDING WHEEL IS LOWERED SO THAT IT FOLLOWS THE TOOTH SHAPE BUT DOES NOT TOUCH THE TOOTH BACK, GULLET, OR FACE, TURN ON THE GRINDING WHEEL

17. WITH GRINDING WHEEL AT CORRECT SPEED AS DETERMINED IN STEP 13, ADJUST HEAD WITH SMALL HAND WHEEL (PT. 3729).  TURNING CLOCKWISE MOVES THE HEAD TOWARD THE TOOTH FACE

18. WHEN WHEEL JUST SPARKS AGAINST THE TOOTH FACE, CONTINUE LOWERING WHEEL INTO GULLET BY ADJUSTING THE BIG HAND WHEEL ON TOP OF MACHINE UNTIL BOTH FACE AND GULLET ARE BEING GROUND

19. REMOVE ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS OF SAW MATERIAL WITH EACH PASS OF THE GRINDING WHEEL.  GRIND THE SAW FOR SEVERAL REVOLUTIONS, MAKING ADJUSTMENTS ONLY AT THE END OF EACH REVOLUTION
