| Armstrong
Automatic Rip and Cut-Off Sharpener |

|
The
No. 17-60 Armstrong sharpener is designed to handle circular saws up to 60" in
diameter. Two larger models of this machine are also available, one to handle saws up to
72" in diameter, and the other saw up to 120" in diameter. Greatly increased
adjustability makes this machine the most universal automatic circular saw sharpener
available. It is extremely sensitive for sharpening saws with fine teeth such as smooth
trim saws, yet heavy enough to easily handle heavy saws such as inserted tooth cut-off
saws, solid tooth edger, slasher and trimmer saws.

Give maximum and minimum sizes of various saws to be sharpened on the machine.
ORDERING CAMS:
Give dimensions of tooth outline you desire the machine to produce or submit a rubbing
outline of the tooth. Cam equipment to produce special tooth outlines can be supplied at a
moderate extra charge. Our sharpeners will produce any shape tooth that can be made on an
automatic sharpener. |
INFORMATION FOR MOTOR DRIVE:
Give voltage, phase, and cycle of current.REPAIRS:
In ordering repairs always give the SIZE NUMBER of the machine and the SERIAL NUMBER.
Also give number on part, if any. If no part number can be found, give
description of it and where used on the machine, or submit a sketch.

IMPORTANT
FEATURES OF DESIGN
ADJUSTABILITY:
A wide range of adjustments on the machine permit the operator to take care of normal
variation in spacing and depth of tooth. In most cases one pair of cams will take care of
the complete range of tooth outlines in any one particular style of tooth.
Alterations in the shape and spacing of the tooth to suit the
filers needs can be made while the machine is operating, effecting both saving in
time, and permitting the operator to actually check the tooth shape while the saw is being
sharpened.
Variable speed control to the grinding wheel is provided to compensate
for grinding wheel gear.
All adjustments are positive and easily maintained. The machine has
been especially designed for absolute simplicity of construction and for ease of
maintenance and operation in the mill.
SETTING FOR SIZE OF SAW ON THE NO. 17-60 AND 17-72 SIZE:
In adjusting the machine for saws of different sizes, this is done with one adjustment.
The adjustment for the amount of hook on the saw teeth is separate from the one used for
taking care of different sizes of saws. In other words, when the adjustment is once made
for the amount of hook desired it is only necessary to adjust the saw up and down,
depending on its size. The 17-120 is arranged as shown on page 23.
CHANGING FROM ONE TYPE OF TOOTH TO ANOTHER:
When necessary to change cams when changing from one type of tooth to another, this is
accomplished easily and quickly through a door provided on the front of the machine. When
changing from cut-off saw tooth with a beveled face to rip saw tooth with a square face,
it is a simple matter to disconnect the beveling cam and lock the grinding wheel head for
position to grind the tooth square.
SHARPENING BEVELED TEETH:
Provision is made for adjusting the machine to bevel the face of the tooth up to 35
degrees in each direction. |
SAW
CLAMP:
There is provision to adjust the tension on the saw clamp so that it holds the saw
properly when clamped in place and means is provided for swinging it out of the way to
permit the saw to be put on and off without any difficulty.
SETTING THE SAW DIRECTLY UNDER THE GRINDING WHEEL:
Provision is made for easily adjusting the opposite screws for setting the saw directly
under the grinding wheel. This can be done while the machine is running and it enables the
operator to keep the teeth on cut-off saws the same length on each side of the saw.
RIGID CONSTRUCTION:
The machine has an all steel frame, completely enclosed, and heavy castings are used to
give rigidity and long life. Armstrong adjustable cone screws are used to provide means to
take up wear on vital moving parts, providing for continued accuracy and smooth operation
indefinitely.
BEARINGS:
Latest improved type and anti-friction bearings are used throughout the machine. Bearings
are dust-sealed for long wear.
PRECISION GRINDING WHEEL HEAD:
The head assembly which carries the grinding wheel is of rugged construction, containing
features of design used in most modern precision grinding equipment. The bearings on which
the grinding wheel arbor is mounted are also completely enclosed.
REPLACEMENT PARTS INTERCHANGEABLE:
Each part of the machine is made to exact tolerances and precision manufacturing
standards, so that replacement parts are fully interchangeable.
ELECTRIC MOTORS:
The sharpener is available for motor drive only, using two standard motors as follows:
- 1 motor to drive the grinding wheel, hp with variable speed control.
- 1 right angle gearhead motor to drive the action, hp.

OPTIONAL AIR BEVELING EQUIPMENT
(Supplied if desired at extra cost) |
 |
This design uses air power
and takes the place of the customary beveling cam on the cam shaft. The connection is
simple and direct, and provides a smoother, quieter grinding action. |
As you
will note in the illustration, the new control is mounted right on the grinding wheel head
providing a more direct connection eliminating many of the parts used with the mechanical
beveling cam arrangement.
As a result maintenance and repair are
simplified since there are less joints to wear, less slack to take up, and
"new-machine" precision can be maintained more easily throughout the life of the
sharpener. |
|
The degrees of
bevel required can be positively set, and you will note there is a scale provided on the
grinding head for ease in achieving the desired amount of bevel. High degrees of bevel are
possible making these machines ideal for smooth trim saw sharpening.
A filter, lubricator and regulator are
provided for the air supply, assuring most efficient operation of the new air unit. The
amount of air needed is comparatively small, being estimated at about 20 lbs.
In addition to the air arrangement
illustrated, a conversion attachment is also available to permit existing No. 17 series
sharpeners to be easily changed over to use on air bevel control. |
