Land ho!

Hi all friends! We arrived in Hiva Oa harbor and our lap top is not working since today! A friend is sending this for us.

A note to All of Dan and Sandy Elkins Friends from Tammy, Dan and Sandy's daughter:

Hi Dan and Sandy are doing good their computer is now fixed and they will get it back around the 1st of June. I will forward there messages at that time. For now they are in Apataki in the Tuamotoes and will be in Papeete by the 24th of May to visit their good friends Lou and Cheryl Marcheso from Coeur d'Alene. Dad still loves his TV (he is asking for movies).

Their computer is dead at this time and may have to get sent to the states to be repaired. They will not be able to receive email for about 2 months or so. I spoke with Dad and Mom tonight they are doing good and got the taxi driver to show them around and he then invited them over for dinner with his family. They will keep in touch with me through friends emails but I will not be able to send him email so for a while it will all be one sided. Hope you all enjoyed the stories up till now. I will keep you all informed with all the current information that I get.

The largest and most fertile island in the southern group of the Marquises, Hiva Oa has deep valleys, lush plateaus and thickly wooded forests.
Located 1 184 km. (740 miles) northeast of Tahiti the town of Atuona is the administrative center for the southern Marquises. Framed in a theatre of
mountains with the Bay of Traitors providing safe anchorage. Atuona is a favorite port of  call for yachts and copra ships.  Atuona village has a gendarmerie, small hospital, post office, banks, weather station, Air Tahiti office, pensions, restaurants and snack bars, stores and shops, telephones and TV. There is a Catholic mission with a boarding school and a Protestant church.

Papeet.jpg (8902 bytes) Papeete, the capital and commercial hub of French Polynesia, hosts the government offices, hospitals, banks, airline and travel agencies, boutiques and pearl shops.  The Central Market (Marché Central) is a must, where you will see traditional Tahitian crafts, flowers, fruits, fish, etc...  The waterfront is
attractive, with a tree lined promenade along a marina with an international yachting community.  International cargo freighters, copra ships, luxury liners and sailing yachts share the harbor.
